  • [Guide] A guide to Serious RolePlay

    What is SeriousRP?
    If you are new to SeriousRP or roleplay in general, this guide aims to teach you the basics and additional information to ensure the best performance on our servers.

    Serious Roleplay, compared to Semi-Serious and below, is intended to be the heaviest form of roleplay in Garry's Mod. You can expect to find long, text-based encounters and high expectations, so it's best to go in prepared.

    In Serious Roleplay, you are expected to play out nearly every detail of your character. This includes pain, fears, backstories and many other quirks.

    CombineControl is set in the Half-Life universe, primarily focused on the dystopian setting of Half-Life 2 and its episodes. It is recommended that you play the games and learn the lore for yourself. Failing that, the Combine Overwiki is a valuable source of information.

    This guide will gloss the most used terms in SeriousRP communities for you.

    --- In-Character (IC) ---

    "In Character" is also known as "In RP" and "IC". It is the foundation of roleplay, and refers to acting as your character. When you write a line of dialogue from your character, that is IC. Imagine that you are a citizen of Earth under the rule of evil alien invaders - the Combine. There are no "cops", only Civil Protection - the "police" force installed under the new puppet government. It's up to you if you want to join them, or you want to fight against them. You can also stay neutral and be a normal everyday citizen, "passing through on your way to parts unknown".

    In IC chat, you're saying things coming from your character's mouth, not yours. Naturally you may not use emoticons in this chat (like "XD") or anything similar. Various IC chat commands exist; "/me" will describe your actions (playername looks around), "/it" will describe the environment (The floor creaks), "/y" will yell, and "/w" will whisper.


    --- Out-Of-Character (OOC) ---

    "Out Of Character" is also known as "Out Of RP" and "OOC". Out Of Character means you are writing as yourself , the player, in the chat, not as your current character. For example, you may ask the server how their day has been, greet a player locally, and so on.
    The main form of OOC communication is the global OOC chat, usable by writing // or /ooc before your message. Every player can see this message, but that also means it has a significant cooldown by default. No spamming!

    You should also know how to speak OOC in local chat, however. This is done using .// or /looc in your message. This type of OOC has the same range as a normal chat message, and is useful for speaking to small crowds and resolving issues in an encounter. You can use LOOC so you don't flood the server's OOC chat for no reason.

    You may also use private messages to other players for OOC purposes. Use /pm [name] [message] for direct private messages. Lastly, you can request OOC support from an admin with the /a command, or from a mentor with /m.

    --- Passive Roleplay (PassiveRP) ---

    "Passive Roleplay", or "PassiveRP" is a roleplay style where the player uses IC action commands such as /me and /it to describe his character's actions to other surrounding players without being in direct confrontation. For example, a citizen can help to build the scene by roleplaying that they are leaning on a wall, or reading a paper.

    Even though these actions rarely affect other characters, they support an immersive roleplay atmosphere in-game, as others will have a better understanding of what you do and what the area looks like.

    --- MetaGaming (MG) ---

    "MetaGaming", also known as "Meta" or "MG", refers to abusing OOC knowledge for IC benefits, or doing the other end of it and sharing vital IC info OOC. Your knowledge and your character's knowledge must remain seperated, meaning something you know Out Of Character is not known In Character unless you find out through valid roleplay.

    Simply put, you cannot use any form of OOC messages (Steam, Discord, private messages, etc.) In Character. Doing so breaks the roleplay and may get you punished.

    Here are some examples of MG:
    • Referring to someone by their chat name without knowing it IC. Your character does not read the chat or see floating name tags, and must learn their name by having it told to them IC.
    • Informing the global OOC chat about a character's plans, such as a Combine raid or traveling. This information must not be shared OOC.
    • Using private messages to arrange meetings or actions with another character. PMs are only for OOC purposes and must not have any effect on IC actions.

    Breaking the New Life Rule (as described further below) also counts as MetaGame, as your character is not supposed to keep their knowledge of various things.

    We will now go over a number of other rulebreaks you must avoid.


    --- Fail Roleplay (FailRP) and minging---

    "Fail Roleplay" or "FailRP" is an invalid action by a character during roleplay, usually due to not following the rules. It is always important to note whether FailRP was intentional or not. Accidental misbehavior may result in a simple void (as described further below), but intentional FailRP will often be considered "minging" and result in a punishment.

    "Minge" is a common Garry's Mod term used to refer to disruptive and immature players. In roleplay, many minges attempt to break the roleplay and cause chaos on purpose. This behavior will not be tolerated.

    FailRP in general includes ignorance of rules regarding FearRP, RDM, ERP (described below), as well as attempting to do impossible actions (often considered PowerGame, also described below).

    --- Random Deathmatch (RDM) ---

    "Random Deathmatch" or "RDM" is a common form of FailRP, and describes a random attack of a character on another without following the rules. For example, when a rebel kills a citizen for fun or when players fight for OOC reasons. Random Deathmatch isn't allowed on any SeriousRP server, and will often be voided.

    Spawnkilling is also considered a form of RDM, as it abuses the forced respawn location of characters who should be able to go in from another direction. Try not to kill a player until they have left their spawn position.

    Be careful not to make random accusations of RDM, as many roleplay scenarios have deep reasons that simply cannot be told to anyone. If you have doubts, the staff may be contacted to request an investigation.

    --- PowerGaming (PG) ---

    "PowerGaming" or "PG" refers to performing unrealistic, impossible, or unfair actions as your character. During scenarios such as combat roleplay, players are encouraged to use "roll" commands (see "Rolling" further below for info) in order to determine the winner of combat actions. Although players may agree to perform a "fumble" a fight, it is usually PowerGame to "force" your victory in a fight.

    Here are some examples of PowerGame:
    • Trying to perform an action such as "/me pulls out his pistol, then shoots the units in their heads" is powergame. You cannot do this many actions in one turn, and you cannot guarantee your success without rolling or agreement.
    • You cannot avoid encounters with actions such as "/me sneaks past the enemy" or "/me runs too fast to be caught", as these require rolling to determine.
    • You cannot perform superhuman actions, or actions that do not fit with your character's stats. A frail person cannot rip open a metal door, and an out-of-shape person cannot perform parkour.
    • A character cannot be an expert in something without a good reason. For example, someone with no medical knowledge cannot perform perfect surgery, and someone who has never used a weapon cannot know every detail of a firearm.
    --- BunnyHopping (BH) ---

    "BunnyHopping" or "BH" is a type of FailRP in the form of ridiculous and rapid jumps. This is an OOC quirk of movement and should not be done in roleplay. Remember that no person can or does jump in such a way in real life.

    --- Erotic Roleplay (ERP) ---

    "Erotic Roleplay" or "ERP" refers to IC romantic actions between players. This mainly refers to sexual actions, but also includes Romantic Roleplay (RRP). CombineControl does not permit ERP, and for multiple reasons. The IC cause is the Combine suppression field. This Combine device causes a worldwide shutdown of both sexual attraction and functions. Therefore, characters can neither have intercourse nor can they become romantically attracted to others.

    Another reason, however, is that CombineControl simply has no intention to incorporate sex into our roleplay. It is considered immature and not suited for the IC universe, and there are far better means of character development.

    ERP is banned within our servers.
    RPP (Romance RP) may not be explicitly sexual, but "romantic" such as kissing etc. This is also banned within the CombineControl servers.




    --- Fear Roleplay (FearRP) ---

    "Fear Roleplay" or "FearRP" describes the IC character's fear of anything within the server. No matter how tough or self-composed the character normally behaves, you must remain fearful of the danger, otherwise it counts as FailRP. ALL characters have FearRP to an extent.

    Nearly every character would find themselves afraid if held at gunpoint or threatened with obvious death. While you might play smart, you must still comply with the enemy's demands and avoid death for as long as possible. If the situation changes, such as if the enemy no longer has weapons, you can stop being as afraid.
    Additionally, if death is certain (such as if the enemy declares their intent to kill you), you may make a last attempt to escape or fight back.

    FearRP also applies to avoiding danger, however. Refugees and rebels should be afraid of entering the city, and they should avoid contact with Combine patrols if possible. You may also be afraid of other threats such as aliens, dangerous terrain, or even someone who looks intimidating.

    While every character has FearRP, certain characters have a lessened impact from it. Some Combine units are augmented to have less fear, to the point of only focusing on self preservation as opposed to actual fear. Many wild aliens, such as zombies or antlions, do not comprehend the danger and will fight to the death to defend their territory.

    --- Pain Roleplay (PainRP) ---

    "Pain Roleplay" or "PainRP" is the IC reaction to injuries to your character using roleplay actions. When you as your character get injured in-game, you will often only lose health points. To provide a more immersive roleplay atmosphere to other players, you could and should perform PainRP with your character's injured body parts, such as showing IC pain or frustration from the injuries, perhaps being knocked to the floor or having trouble using the damaged limb. PainRP also relates to FearRP, as your character fears pain and will follow orders or do other things to avoid it.

    --- New Life Rule (NLR) ---

    "New Life Rule" or "NLR" means that the player's character forgets knowledge of various information learned before dying, including (but not limited to) names, characters, unusual locations or information gained from investigations. In any death which warrants a PK, your character's new identity means they must forget the information from the dead identity. See below for "PK" info.

    Failure to "forget" this information after death is considered metagame.
    In essence, your death and any relevant actions is "voided" (as described below).

    --- Voiding (Void) ---

    "Voiding" or "Void" is the OOC act of reverting or cancelling IC events due to necessity. This may happen if a rule was broken or a player forgot to incorporate something important, meaning the roleplay must be restarted to fix it. Every partaking character in the roleplay scene, assuming players agree, will forget what was "voided", much like time was reset.

    Sometimes players use the term "void" to cover up FailRP, intended or not, so roleplay can continue. Abuse of voiding as an excuse for "jokes" or trolling results in punishments for the player. RP situations cannot be voided without the permission of a staff member, this is to avoid people excusing themselves from disadvantaged RP situations or trying to twist a situation in their favour.

    --- Player-/PermaKill (PK) ---

    "PlayerKill", "PermaKill" or "PK" is the permanent IC death of a character. It may either happen in roleplay or as a form of punishment given by admins for misbehavior. When a character dies, they cannot simply be revived. They will remain dead and the player should create a new identity for the character, which must follow NLR as described further above.

    Some deaths may be excempt from PK, but for maximum realism, all deaths must be permanent. Sufficient medical roleplay may be accepted in order to revive a character if it was realistically possible. In the event of punishing PKs, the scale may vary. If your character dies repeatedly or in a high profile RP situation, you may be subject to an identity PK. In some cases, especially where rules have been broken during the RP situation, you may be asked to forfeit your inventory.

    The Combine factions are also subject to "inactivity PKs". If the character is not used for a given amount of time (31 days), they will be PK'd by a high-ranked unit to avoid inactive players hogging the roles.

    While a PK'd character does not know their "past" life, certain information may be kept. This can include training as a Combine unit, knowledge of bases as a rebel, and more. If a Combine unit is PK'd, they will simply be replaced IC by another unit of the same position. If an organization member is killed and is not evicted from the group, they will simply be replaced by another organization member.


    --- Rolling and combat ---

    "Rolling" is a staple of roleplay, especially when it comes to combat. The term comes from tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons, in which you roll a dice to determine your success or failure in an action. Rolling is frequently used in combat to decide if an attack hits or fails, but can also be used outside of combat. Examples include trying to understand a garbled message, lifting heavy weights, or resisting torture.

    Rolling is affected by many things, such as stats and advantage/disadvantage. For a full explanation of these concepts and a tutorial on combat, see the following guide:
